What is a Pit Fire?

A pit fire is an alternative method of firing pottery which uses organic matter and sometimes a little help from chemicals to color the pottery.  Organic materials may include (but not limited to) seaweed, horse manure, straw, corn husks, sawdust, banana peels, and coffee grounds.  My pit is an above ground enclosure made with cinder blocks in my sister’s large back yard in the country.  With careful planning, the pit is filled with organics and pottery and wood fuel and lit.  In the morning, it seems like Christmas as the pit is uncovered and you look and see what treasures you have created!
